EMDR Therapy
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an extensively researched evidenced-based treatment approach that helps people resolve past traumas. A trauma can be identified as a anything from a humiliating experience, distressing event such as divorce, history of abuse, car accident, or an assault for example. EMDR takes talk therapy alone a step further and allows your brain to be the guiding tool for therapy.
You see our brains are like computers; every day we experience new things and at night when we go to sleep , those experiences are processed and downloaded into our memory. For some reason, sometimes when trauma occurs, our brains do not process the event correctly and the memory gets stored improperly. This leads the memory to get stuck in our nervous system which can cause a manifestation of distressing symptoms such as nightmares, flashbacks, disinterest in activities, hyper/under arousal, and emotional overwhelm. Even though you might think your traumatic event(s) happened a long time ago, your body keeps the record of it and associates new memories with it.
EMDR therapy is designed to help people find these unprocessed memories and apply Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) to re-process them so you can get back on track.
